3 HVAC Issues that Leave Homeowners Stumped

You don’t have to be an expert to diagnose every problem with your HVAC system, but there certainly are some problems that may leave you scratching your head. For example, an average homeowner may be able to tell when an HVAC unit is frozen due to a bad condenser coil or refrigerant leak, but what does it mean when the AC unit seems to be running fine and you’re still not getting adequate airflow into your home?

Problems like these can drive homeowners crazy, and keep HVAC companies busy. Fortunately, the reasons you’re having HVAC issues may not be as complicated as you think. Here are three uncommon issues with HVAC systems and what might be causing the problem.

Your HVAC Unit is Humming but the Fan isn’t Blowing

If your HVAC unit is making a sound but the fan is not turning, you may be having issues with the capacitor. The capacitor stores electrical energy and jumpstarts the fan when your HVAC unit turns on. The humming sound you hear is the motor running, but the fan isn’t turning because it didn’t have enough electrical energy to start on its own without the capacitor.

Other issues you may notice when you have a bad capacitor include intermittent starting and stopping of your unit, and receiving warm air when you’re trying to cool your house.

Your HVAC Unit is Tripping the Circuit Breaker

If your circuit breaker trips when your HVAC unit attempts to start, your HVAC unit is most likely pulling more amps than the breaker is rated for. The breaker trips and shuts your power off as a protective measure to keep you and your home safe from overcurrent, damage and potential fire.

This could be happening for a number of reasons. A dirty filter or dirty unit could be causing your system to work too hard and subsequently draw more energy. It could also happen if a motor is shorting, or the compressor is pulling too much electricity due to aging or faulty wiring. There’s also a chance it may not be your HVAC system at all, you could also have a problem with your circuit breaker box.

Your HVAC Unit is Running but You’re Not Getting Much Air in Your Home.

If you check your HVAC unit and it’s running fine, but you’re not getting the expected volume of air in your home, there’s likely an issue with your ductwork. Efficient ductwork carries and disperses air evenly throughout your home, but there are several reasons why it may not be working properly. The ductwork could be leaking due to holes caused by pests or faulty seals, or could have also twisted or torn when it was installed, preventing optimal airflow.

Other problems that could prevent airflow include poorly sealed registers and grills, longstanding dirt or debris build up and poor or improper duct insulation.
